Manny Pacquiao is set to release his international single on April 28

Manny Pacquiao is set to release his international single on April 28, more than a week before his anticipated bout against American Shane Mosley.

His single is the hit ballad by Dan Hill, “Sometimes When We Touch.” He even recorded the song with Hill, the latter being “drawn by the honesty and the gentleness of his performance.” Hill, who popularized the song, rendered his service as a back up vocal for Pacquiao’s cover.

It will be recalled that Pacquiao performed the song last year on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. Now, he is set to return on the said late night program to debut his Dan Hill cover as a single that will be available on iTunes eventually.

Google Philippines has released a list of 20 Most Influential Filipino Women

Google Philippines has released a list of 20 Most Influential Filipino Women with “greatest online mindshare in 2010.”

Google came up with the ranking based on the number of search queries via its search tool called Zeitgeist.

The list is made up of known personalities in the field of politics, showbusiness, fashion and media.

Topping the list is Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad, an ex-girlfriend of President Noynoy Aquino. Shalani is currently the co-host of Willie Revillame in the latter’s primetime variety game show on TV5.

Following in second place is the Queen of All Media, Kris Aquino. I wonder why Kris did not top the ranking since it’s about the “level of awareness in the minds of consumers that a particular product commands” and she has the most product endorsements than all other women in the Top 5 combined.

Capturing the “bronze” position is another TV5 personality and also a controversial celebrity, Ruffa Gutierrez.

Here is the complete list of 20 Most Influential Filipino Women of 2010 according to Google Philippines:

1. Shalani Soledad (politician / TV host)

2. Kris Aquino (TV host / actress)

3. Ruffa Gutierrez (TV host / actress)

4. Maria Venus Raj (beauty queen / TV host)

5. Charice (international singer)

6. Angel Locsin (actress)

7. Sarah Geronimo (singer / actress)

8. Regine Velasquez (singer / actress)

9. Heart Evangelista (actress)

10. Miriam Defensor Santiago (senator)

11. Lea Salonga (international singer)

12. Doris Dumlao (business writer)

13. Kristine Hermosa (actress)

Will SIM card registration help curb terrorism? By Janie Octia, Yahoo! Southeast Asia

600yahoo_simcard
By Janie Octia, Yahoo! Southeast Asia
The January 25 bus blast that left five people dead prompted some lawmakers to revive calls for a mandatory SIM card registration nationwide. According to initial investigations, a mobile phone was used to detonate the bomb inside the passenger bus.
Congressmen Rufus and Maximo Rodriguez filed a bill to regulate the distribution and sale of SIM cards, while Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III called on the telecom companies to register SIM cards.
The proposal drew mixed reactions from the Yahoo! Philippines Answers community, considering the number of existing mobile phone subscribers in the country as well as overseas Filipinos who are also maintaining local SIM cards.
User Nier feels that registering a SIM card will not stop people from carrying out a crime and that lawmakers should focus more on improving the government’s law enforcement capability.
Jess B., who is also against the proposal, argued that this could lead to more cases of mobile phone theft.
“What if it’s your cellphone that has been stolen and was used for criminal activity? Can you imagine the problems you will be facing? You will now be the prime suspect and will have a hard time explaining to these idiots that it’s not you who did it,” added Jess B.
Users Nove and JuST also believed that criminals will be wise enough not to use their own mobile phones for criminal activities.
Meanwhile, users like John Mark and professor love believe that SIM cards should be registered.  ”I’d trade in my privacy for national security and peace,” explained professor love.
Another user, Lyniel Dylandy, thought that SIM card registration should have been implemented right from the start. “Right now, you can actually deceive anyone by using a SIM that you just bought on that day, and throw it on the next,” Lyniel Dylandy said.
A number of users also compared the rule that other countries follow when it comes to purchasing a SIM card.
“Here in Doha, you will not be able to buy sim card, apply for a phone line, apply for electricity, etc without Qatar ID/passport copy,” shared user Ced.
Eric Panis from UAE, Arbz of Australia and Ferdinand from New Zealand also agreed to the proposal. They revealed that SIM card registration was mandatory in their respective countries.
While some users thought of the effects of the proposal on crime prevention, others expressed different concerns.
“It is also a security measure. It prevents others from harassing us with text messages from numbers that we do not know,” user june08 said.
Ailene added that it’s time for a change, but she seemed more concerned with something else. “Please don’t include corruption in this project,” she pleaded.
If you’re a mobile phone owner, would you be willing to register your SIM? Do you have other suggestions on how the government could address this issue?

Grand Lotto winner let another bettor cut in line to win the P740-M pot

The New York-based balikbayan could have missed the mind-boggling jackpot if he did not let another bettor cut in line at the lotto ticket outlet. The winner of the P740-million Grand Lotto jackpot “generously" let another person place her bet first and waited for his turn before he could place his winning combination for the lottery prize, a Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) official said Thursday. The PCSO earlier said that the Grand Lotto winner, who placed his bet at an outlet in Olongapo City in Zambales, used the “Lucky Pick" method, which generates randomly selected numbers, to come up with the winning combination. (See: Jackpot! Olongapo bettor wins P741.176-M lotto prize) “May sumingit na babae bago siya tumaya pero hindi siya nagalit at pinabayaan niya. Mukhang mabait talaga siyang tao," PCSO chair Margie Juico told GMANews.TV in a phone interview on Thursday night.

(A woman cut in line before he could place his bet, but he kept his cool and allowed her to place her bet first.)

The woman also used the “Lucky Pick" method, which meant that if she hadn’t cut in line, she would have received the winning combination. “Imagine, kung hindi sumingit ‘yung babae at hinintay, siya dapat ang nanalo," Juico added.

Juico said the Grand Lotto winner, a 60-year-old married man with three children, was a balikbayan from New York in the United States, who returned to the Philippines for a “sentimental journey" in his home country. “He has been staying in the US for a long time. He went back to the Philippines to visit places. Nagkatuwaan lang silang magkakapatid na tumaya sa Subic at doon siya sinwerte [He and his siblings agreed to place a bet at Subic, just for fun, and he got lucky]," she said. The PCSO chairperson, who personally handed the prize to the winner on Thursday afternoon, described the balikbayan as a “kind-looking" man. (See: Lucky bettor claims P741-M Grand Lotto prize) “Nakakatuwa kasi simple lang talaga siya at mukhang mabait. Sinabi niya sa akin na madasalin din siya. Dininig ang panalangin niya," she said.

Filipino boxer Rey Saludar won the country’s 3rd gold medal

Filipino boxer Rey Saludar won the country’s 3rd gold medal in the ongoing 16th Asian games in Guangzhou, China.

Saludar bested Chinese boxer Yong Chang with a nerve-wracking 13-11 win in the Men’s 52 kg. gold medal bout at the Foshan Gymnasium.
The hometown boy ruled round 1 but our very own Saludar battled back with a flurry of punches in the 2nd Round, scoring 9 points against the Chinese’s 3.
Saludar played it safe in round 3 but Chang was able to outscore him, 3-6. Fortunately, it was not enough.
Aside from bringing honor to the country, Saludar will also receive an incentive from the government and Rep. Manny Pacquiao.

Showtime V.S MTRCB

The Court of Appeals (CA) has junked the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board’s (MTRCB) appeal seeking to reverse the appellate court's earlier decision to set aside a 20-day preventive suspension order it issued against “Showtime.”

In dismissing the MTRCB's motion for reconsideration, the CA pointed out that the agency failed to present new arguments that would justify a reversal of its April 28 resolution.

“With the arguments raised in the instant motion being reiteration of issues that have already been previously passed upon, we [see] no cogent reason for the reversal of our decision... the motion for reconsideration is denied,” the resolution stated.

Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang penned the 2-page resolution. Associate Justices Ramon Garcia and Manuel Barrios concurred with the ruling.

The case stemmed from the controversial statements made by then guest judge Rosanna Roces on the ABS-CBN noontime show last January 7.

In the said episode, Roces uttered remarks that allegedly targeted teachers. Her remarks, which drew criticisms, prompted the network to remove her as a judge of the show.

The MTRCB then slapped “Showtime” with a 20-day preventive suspension, prompting the network to bring the case to the court.

ABS-CBN questioned the need for the MTRCB order, given its prompt action to remove Roces from the

Illegal lab discovered due to electricity bill

A monthly power bill amounting P80,000 triggered a raid on a three-story building that was found to be housing a methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) laboratory in Quezon City.

Radio dzBB reported Saturday the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and Quezon City police raided the building after getting a tip from its owner.

But the lawmen failed to arrest the tenant, initially identified as one Santos Wong.

Quezon City police director Chief Superintendent Benjardi Mantele said they conducted surveillance on the building at Lot 1 Block 19 in Bagbag village in Quezon City, after getting a tip from its owner Cesar Viray.

Viray said he became suspicious of the activities of Wong, who rented the building for P70,000 a month starting Aug. 1, after seeing an electricity bill of P80,000.

The report quoted Viray as saying he was surprised to see "questionable" paraphernalia in the building. — LBG, GMANews.TV
